New edition of our Sustainability Report

At URSA, we know how important sustainability is for people and the environment. Our insulation materials make a significant contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings. That is what sets us apart and that is how we are measured. Find out more about our sustainable initiatives in   the Xella Group's new sustainability report - transparent and measurable.

The Xella Group wants to have a positive impact on the environment and climate through its sustainable construction and insulation materials as well as based on its own actions. Compliance with social and governance criteria along the Xella value chain are also key goals. Xella reports on what has already been achieved, the ESG strategy and roadmap for achieving the ambitious goals in the voluntary sustainability report “Pointing the way”.

“Xella construction and insulation materials stand for efficient, sustainable and affordable construction and renovation. We are thus making a significant contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings and the reduction of CO2 emissions. We rely on the recyclability of our products in order to conserve natural resources and minimize waste. At the same time, we avoid the negative effects of our own activities - e.g. B. by reducing CO2 emissions or using secondary raw materials in the manufacture of our products. With our measures and ambitious goals, we deliberately keep an eye on both, ”explains Christophe Clemente, CEO of the Xella Group.

Reduce your own CO2 intensity by 30% by 2030

Based on the CO2 emissions in 2019, the CO2 intensity (Scope 1 and 2) is to be reduced by 30% by 2030. With the reduction of 4% in 2020 compared to the previous year, a first big step has been successfully taken. The installation of photovoltaic systems, the increased use of renewable energies and investments in more energy-efficient systems and machines will help achieve this goal over the next few years.

Eternal product cycles

72-56-80 are not body measurements, but essential key figures of the Xella circular economy. The proportion of externally recycled and internally processed glass for the production of URSA mineral wool in 2020 was 72%. By 2030 it should be 80%. URSA is a 100% subsidiary of the Xella Group. 56% of the water used for the production of construction and insulation materials was recovered in 2020 and fed back into the production cycle. Xella is one of the few companies in the sector that has already established functioning circular processes. For example, since 2016 around 22,000 tonnes of broken aerated concrete have been collected from Xella customers' construction sites and recycled. The “BigBag” concept started in Germany and Denmark is to be transferred to other countries as well.

Social responsibility and fair cooperation

Satisfied, well-trained and motivated employees as well as diversity in the workforce are what make the Xella team successful. Occupational safety is always the top priority at Xella. In recent years, the rate of accidents with downtime has been more than halved. Xella's aim is to reduce work accidents by another 40% by the end of 2025. Xella relies not only on technical and procedural solutions, but also on extensive training measures and the creation of comprehensive security awareness among all employees.

“We can only achieve our ambitious goals through the skills and experience as well as the commitment of our workforce. We have already achieved a lot together, but we want to do more and keep improving. We support our performance through training and further education measures, fair and performance-oriented remuneration and an environment characterized by openness, respect and diversity. This also means adhering to our values and guidelines, ”explains Christophe Clemente, CEO of the Xella Group.

Xella sustainability report

“With our sustainability report, which is based on the GRI standard, we want to make our stakeholders aware of the vision and the specific sustainability goals we are pursuing. By making our ambitious projects and goals public, we also impose an accountability on ourselves: We must and want to be measured by our progress, ”explains Dr. Michael Leicht, Head of Group HR and responsible member of the Executive Committee of the Xella Group, on the voluntarily prepared report.
